FAQ: How to Flash Tune Your Car

Welcome to the GLS Performance Motorsports FAQ page, where we walk you through the exact steps to flash-tune your VW or Audi MQB car using our Simos tuning software. Whether you're new to tuning or a seasoned pro, these instructions will guide you through the process, ensuring you get the most out of your performance upgrade.

  1. What do I need to get started?

Before you dive into flashing your car, make sure you have the following:

  • An Android device tablet or phone (sorry no IOS) with a fully charged battery.
  • A reliable internet connection.
  • The Simos Tuning Software installed on your Android device.
  • A high-quality OBD-II automotive interface or Dongle.
  • A battery charger for your car (to avoid any power interruptions during the flash).
  • Your car's VIN and the correct tuning file.
  1. How do I flash my car's ECU with Simos Tuning Software?

Follow these step-by-step instructions to flash your car's ECU:

Step 1: Prep your car and laptop.

  • Make sure your car's battery is fully charged and connected to a battery charger. A stable power supply is crucial during the flashing process.
  • Start your laptop and ensure it's connected to a reliable power source and the internet.

Step 2: Connect your laptop to the car.

  • Plug the OBD-II cable into your car's OBD port (usually located under the dashboard on the driver's side).
  • Connect the other end of the cable to your laptop.

Step 3: Launch the Simos Tuning Software.

  • Open the Simos Tuning Software on your laptop.
  • Wait for the software to recognize your car. The software will automatically read your car's VIN and current ECU data.

Step 4: Select the appropriate tuning file.

  • Once your car's details are loaded, select the tuning file that matches your car's specifications. Double-check that the file is the correct version for your car's ECU.

Step 5: Start the flashing process.

  • Click the "Flash" button in the Simos Tuning Software.
  • Follow any on-screen prompts to confirm the process. The software will begin flashing your car's ECU, and you'll see a progress bar indicating the status.

Step 6: Monitor the flash.

  • During the flashing process, do not disconnect the laptop, cable, or battery charger. Interrupting the flash can cause issues with your ECU.
  • The software will notify you when the flash is complete. This typically takes a few minutes.

Step 7: Finalize and test.

  • Once the flash is complete, the software will prompt you to turn off the ignition for a few seconds and then turn it back on.
  • Start your car and let it idle. Check for any error codes using the Simos Tuning Software.
  • If everything looks good, take your car for a test drive to feel the difference!
  1. Can I "brick" my car?

It's a common concern, but let’s clear things up. The Simos Tuning Software has been rigorously tested with thousands of flashes, and the chances of bricking your ECU are extremely low. The only way to hard brick your ECU is by flashing the wrong software version that doesn’t match your car’s immobilizer (IMMO). If this happens, the ECU will need to be recovered in boot mode, which requires opening the ECU.

In the unlikely event that you end up with a bricked ECU, don’t panic—we've got your back. We can recover ECUs in boot mode. Just contact us for support, and we'll help you get back on the road.

  1. What should I do if something goes wrong during the flash?

If you encounter any issues during the flashing process, follow these steps:

  1. Don’t disconnect anything. Keep everything connected and wait for any error messages.
  2. Check the error code. Use the Simos Tuning Software to read any error codes and determine the issue.
  3. Contact GLS Performance Motorsports Support. If you're unable to resolve the issue, reach out to our support team. We’re here to help you troubleshoot and get your car running smoothly again.
  1. What should I do after flashing my car?

  • Test drive your car. Take your car for a spin to ensure everything is working as expected and enjoy the improved performance.
  • Stay connected. Keep in touch with GLS Performance Motorsports for updates, support, and more tuning options.
